MIKEY THE POWERFUL OWLET BOOK LAUNCH

It was a full house with representatives from 15 local community groups (including the Beecroft-Cheltenham Civic Trust) attending the launch of “Mikey the Powerful Owlet & Friends: Saving Byles Creek Valley & Beyond” at the award-winning Children’s Bookshop Beecroft on Wednesday night 29 November 2017.

Guests enjoyed passionate speeches about protecting our environment and precious flora and fauna (particularly vulnerable Powerful Owls) from Graham Ross VMM of The Garden Clinic on 2GB 873 (who wrote the book foreword), and Dr Mehreen Faruqi Greens MLC (who wrote the book afterword).

Other speakers included: Dr Beth Mott BirdLife Australia's Powerful Owl Project Officer; Deb Fleet local Sydney Wildlife volunteer; Robyn Smith Secretary & Vice President of the Byles Creek Valley Union (the book publisher); and James Stanton-Cooke (Master of Ceremonies) Co-founder of BeardsOn for Conservation.

Written by Georgia Cameron and photographed by Michael Bianchino, this not-for-profit community project will donate $5 from each copy sold to Sydney Wildlife, a registered charity licensed by NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service. This 24/7 rescue and advice service is operated entirely by volunteers who rehabilitate and release sick, injured and orphaned wildlife and educate the community, at all levels, about the need to protect native animals and preserve their habitats.

The first book “Mikey the Powerful Owlet: Saving Byles Creek Valley”, which is now sold out raised over $2,000 for BirdLife Australia’s Powerful Owl Project. According to Paul Macdonald, owner of The Children’s Bookshop at Beecroft, it was in their top 10 best sellers list for 2017.
