STEP talk: The effect of aerially deployed fire retardant on the ecosystem

St Andrews Uniting Church, corner of Vernon Street and Chisholm Street, Turramurra (more info — no need to book).

In 2019, parts of South Turramurra turned pink due to fire retardants being dumped on houses. This prompted Shannon Kaiser to investigate the potential impact of these chemicals on the ecosystem for his PhD. He is also investigating the point where sensitive and resilient species first start being impacted by these chemicals and the effects of retardant on water quality.

Shannon has finished his lab work and will talk about his results so far. He will also discuss his preliminary and upcoming fieldwork.

Sat 20 April, 9 am to 12 pm

Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion West Head field trip
(organised by Pittwater Natural Heritage Association)

Resolute picnic area car park, West Head Road, Ku-ring-gai Chase

Learn more about the proposed Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion with guides Bob Conroy and Peter Mitchell. They will explain why a GeoRegion is proposed and how it could be potentially nominated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, boosting its environmental protection. Then we will visit several sites along West Head Road to look at the landscape, flora, fauna, geology and Indigenous sites, returning to the park entrance about midday.
